Unit 2

Lesson 6 - Frame Relay and ATM

   Introduction

This lesson addresses two of the most common WAN protocols in use today, frame relay and ATM. Frame relay is derived from the HDLC protocol covered in a previous lesson, and has replaced X.25 protocol extensively. ATM, a cell relay protocol, is designed to handle multimedia traffic.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.

Describe the fields in a frame relay header

2.

Understand the basic operation of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell relay

3.

Describe the contents of the ATM header fields

Key Point
Frame relay and ATM protocols transport a good deal of the information that flows on the Internet.
