Unit 2

Lesson 2 - Ethernet Version 2, 802.3, and 802.1Q

   Introduction

Ethernet Version 2 (also Version "II") is the original version also known as DIX, which stands for Digital, Intel, and Xerox, the vendor consortium who first created it. The IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard was established some time later. You will learn that both Ethernet frame types will be seen flowing on the same LAN and both utilize carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD). Additionally, an 802.1Q tagged VLAN frame will be examined to see the frame changes made by the adoption of this standard.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.

Describe the format of an Ethernet Version 2 frame

2.

Describe the format of an Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 802.3 Ethernet frame

3.

Understand the difference between a Version 2 frame and an IEEE 802.3 frame

4.

Describe the format of a frame carrying 802.1Q virtual LAN (VLAN) information

Key Point
Version 2 and IEEE 802.3 encoded Ethernet frames co-exist on the same network.
