Unit 2

Lesson 1 - LAN Protocols - IEEE 802 Family

   Introduction

This lesson provides an overview of LAN protocols and covers the IEEE 802 family of Data Link Layer protocols. LLC (Logical Link Control) protocols sit at the upper sublayer of Layer 2, while the MAC protocols occupy the lower sublayer. You will learn the contents of the LLC header and how they are used to deliver the information to the protocol process running in the layer above.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.

Distinguish between the sublayers of the Data Link Layer

2.

List some common Media Access Control (MAC) sublayer protocols

3.

Decipher fields of Data Link Layer protocols in traces

Key Point
The Data Link Layer is modular, easily accommodating new protocols.
