Lesson 7 - LAN Protocol Analyzer Operations

   Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn how to trace traffic flowing on a LAN. There are a number of protocol analyzers available with standard features and additional value-added features that are priced accordingly. Most protocol analyzers have the same look and feel in terms of the basic information that is displayed. The act of taking a trace is normally referred to as capturing.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.	Understand the basic features of a protocol analyzer
2.	Capture, display, and analyze a Ping command with the Ethereal protocol analyzer
3.	Set a display filter to show selected portions of a trace
