Unit 1

Lesson 6 - Addressing

   Introduction

There are three primary address types that are used by intermediate and end nodes to deliver information across a network: physical addresses, network addresses, and process addresses--the last two being logical addresses. In this lesson you will study these address types and learn how they work together to provide end-to-end communications.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.

List the three primary types of addresses found in networks

2.

Know how physical and logical addresses are used

3.

Know why process addresses are necessary

4.

Understand how the different address types are interrelated

5.

Understand Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) and how to read an ARP trace

6.

Understand Domain Name System (DNS) and how to read a DNS trace

Key Point
