Unit 2

Summary

Real Audio Clip

This unit discussed the properties of the three main physical transmission media used for networks today: copper cabling, optical fiber cabling, and WLANs. By now, it should be apparent that there is no one best type of physical transmission medium.

Most LANs use UTP copper wiring, because of its attractive combination of low cost, simple installation, and high reliability. However, fiber optic cable and wireless transmission offer their own unique benefits that can often solve connection problems in challenging physical locations, or give users greater mobility. Thus, the choice of a physical medium must always balance operational requirements, such as speed, security, flexibility, and simplicity, against cost.
