Unit 2

Lesson 5 - Ring Topology

   Introduction

Ring topology is another commonly used topology in computer networks. There are two common ring topologies used in networks: ring and star ring. A ring consists of nodes connected in a ring through multiple point-to-point links, forming a physical and logical ring structure. A star ring structure consists of a physical star, but a logical ring.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1.

Understand the difference between physical and logical ring structures

2.

Know what type of cabling is used for ring topologies

3.

Understand star ring topology and usage

4.

Know advantages and disadvantages of ring and star ring topologies

Key Point
Ring topologies do not provide redundancy unless there are two rings.
