Unit 2

Lesson 4 - Star Topology

   Topology Characteristics

The 10BaseT Ethernet Configuration Diagram illustrates the most popular way to wire Ethernet LANs today. This configuration consists of an Ethernet hub, or concentrator, connecting eight workstations. This is a star configuration and it is found in Ethernet networks that use twisted pair cable. The twisted pair cable uses RJ-45 connectors that connect directly to the NIC on the device end, and to the hub on the other end. Category 5 UTP cabling is commonly used to wire these types of networks. 10BaseT networks provide the following advantages over 10Base2 and 10Base5 networks:

Hubs can detect defective cables and devices.

Nodes are easily added and removed from a network.

Network problems are easier to troubleshoot because suspect nodes can easily be disconnected from the hub.
