Before You Begin

To ensure that your web experience is the best possible, you will need to do a few things before exploring this site:

  1. Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer are the two web browsers that will give PC users the best results for viewing this site. Netscape Navigator, however, is the only browser that provides the necessary functionality for Macintosh users. You can download these browsers for free.

  2. To listen to the narration on this site, your computer needs a plug-in called RealPlayer, available on the Internet for free.

  3. You also need to make sure the audio on your computer is turned on.

  4. To view some of the graphics on this site, your computer needs a plug-in called Shockwave, available on the Internet for free.

  5. You can minimize the real audio pop up screen to effectively view the Flash animation.

  6. Make sure your screen resolution is set properly.

Before You Begin: Details

To download Netscape Navigator:

  1. Go to http://www.netscape.com/download
  2. Click on Communicator (including Navigator) Standard Edition.
  3. Click the Download link.
  4. Fill out the appropriate information on the form provided, then click on the button DOWNLOAD FOR FREE.

To download Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download
  2. Choose the specific version of Internet Explorer that is compatible with your computer.
  3. Follow instructions provided on the Explorer page to download and install a free copy of Internet Explorer.

Real Audio To download RealPlayer or RealAudio Player:
  1. Click here to test if your computer already has the RealPlayer 5.0.
  2. If you do not hear the audio and get an error message on your machine, then proceed to step 3. Otherwise, you are OK.
  3. Go to http://www.real.com/products/player/index.html to download the real player software.
  4. On the RealAudio Home Page, click on RealPlayer to get a free copy.
  5. On the Download RealPlayer page, click on RealPlayer.
  6. Fill out the appropriate information on the form provided then click the Download Now button.
  7. Click on a download location link, such as Seattle, WA USA.
  8. Follow the instructions to install the RealPlayer.
  9. Restart your web browser.

Macromedia To download Macromedia Shockwave Flash:

  1. Click here to test if your computer already has the Shockwave Flash plug-in.
  2. If the animation does not show up in a new window on your screen, then proceed to step 3. Otherwise, you are OK.
  3. Go to http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/
  4. On the Download Shockwave page, fill out the form. Before you click the ownload Now button, review section #3 on this page for detailed instructions on downloading Shockwave Flash.

To minimize the audio pop up screen:

  1. Click on Start to begin the Flash animation.
  2. A small pop up screen will appear on yor screen displaying the real audio information.
  3. To minimize this pop up screen click on the x in the top left hand corner of this small screen.
  4. You can also click on the screen of the browser outside the real audio box.

To change your screen resolution on Windows 95:

  1. Click the Start button in the Windows 95 Taskbar.
  2. Highlight the Settings item and click on the Control Panel item.
  3. Double-click the Display icon.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Drag the slider in the Desktop Area section to either 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.
  6. Set the color palette to the highest possible setting at your resolution.
    (NOTE: If you have a Diamond Video Card, do not use 16-bit color.)
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. Follow the prompts given by Windows 95.
  9. Close the Control Panel window.

To change your screen resolution on a Macintosh:

  1. Click on the apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.
  2. Drag your mouse to the words Control Panels, then open Monitors & Sound.
  3. Click on the monitor icon on the top of the screen.
  4. You can now change the color and resolution of your screen. Choose either 832 x 624 or 1024 x 768.

To change the volume on Windows 95:

  1. Click on the icon of the loudspeaker on the far right side of the Windows 95 taskbar. If you do not see a loudspeaker icon, click on the Start button in the Windows 95 taskbar.
  2. Click on the Control Panel.
  3. Double click on the Multimedia icon.
  4. In the Audio sheet, add a checkmark to the option called Show volume control on the Taskbar.
  5. Click OK and close the Control Panel window.
  6. Make sure that the Mute option is not selected and that the volume slider is not at the bottom of the scale.

To change the volume on a Macintosh:

  1. Click on the apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.
  2. Drag your mouse to Control Panels, then open Monitors & Sound.
  3. Click on the sound icon on the top of the screen.
  4. Use your mouse to move the levers on your screen to change the volume.
