[About This Glossary]
NetWare Core Protocol (NCP)
NCP is the protocol used by Novell NetWare-based networks to transmit information between clients and servers. The IPX protocol is used to transmit NCP messages.
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM)
NLM is software that runs on a Novell server. It is commonly referred to as communications services software. NLM provides internetworking functions for Novell servers and workstations. The primary purpose of NLM is to allow database servers and communication servers to communicate with the server network operating system (NOS). This is because applications, such as databases, cannot run on a server processor with NetWare.
Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)
NetBIOS is a software system developed by Sytek and IBM that has become the de facto standard for application interface to local area networks (LANs). It operates at the Session Layer of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack. Applications can call NetBIOS routines to carry out functions such as data transfer across a LAN.
Network Control Protocol (NCP)
NCP is used by PPP to configure Network Layer protocols that operates over a serial link. PPP allows multiplexing more than one protocol onto the same link.
Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS)
The NDIS standard was developed by Microsoft and 3Com to provide a common interface between network interface card (NIC) drivers and networking protocols. The functionality of NDIS is comparable to the Open Data-Link Interface (ODI).
Network Interface Card (NIC)
NIC is the computer card that attaches a computer to a network.
Network Interface Card (NIC) Address
A NIC address is another term for hardware address or MAC address. A MAC address is hard-coded into the NIC.
Network File System (NFS)
NFS is a file management system commonly used in UNIX-based computer systems.
Network Operating System (NOS)
NOS is the software that manages server operations and provides services to clients. The NOS manages the interface between the network's underlying transport capabilities and applications residing on the server.
Node
A node is any device connected to a network. Typically, nodes are thought of as workstations or PCs which have communication capabilities.
