Summary

   Overview

In the first half of this course, we learned many fundamental concepts and theories about networking. After focusing on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, we now know the basic vocabulary networking professionals use to talk about data communication systems.

In this unit, and the rest of this course, we will use those concepts to explain the specific technologies and protocols used in most local area networks (LANs). Specifically, this unit will teach you about the popular LAN protocols of Ethernet and Token Ring, and the increasingly important technology of wireless networking. As with earlier units, we will start low in the OSI protocol stack, then work our way up to higher layers of LAN networking protocols and software.
