Unit 3

Lesson 3 - Communicating Across a Network

   Introduction

In this lesson we explain the basic principles of how information makes its way from one computer to another computer across a network. We will go into the specific details of this process in the rest of this course. But for now, we will use the concepts discussed thus far to give you a general idea of how a local area network (LAN) handles a routine task such as transmitting an application's request for data on another computer.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you will be able to:

1.

Explain the role of the client redirector software

2.

Describe the steps that occur when a computer requests a resource from another computer over the network

3.

Explain the difference between requesting local and remote data

Key Point
Client redirection software is responsible for directing messages over the network.
