Summary

   Overview

In Unit 2, we explained that the sender and receiver of a signal must both follow rules that define the structure and meaning of a message. Just as humans must share a common language to communicate, computers that communicate across a network must also have a common language, as well as rules for the use of that language. Those languages and rules are called "protocols," and many different protocols are used in data networking.

This unit introduces you to the basic terms and concepts that underlie all computer communication protocols. You will learn how protocols work, and how different protocols work together to move data across a network. This knowledge will become the foundation of your understanding of how computer networks function.
