Unit 2

Lesson 6 - Overview of a Structured Cable Plant

   Cabling Types

The EIA/TIA-568 standard specifies the types of cable that may be used in various subsystems.

Vertical (Backbone) Cabling

100-ohm UTP, Category 3, 4, or 5 (Category 5 recommended), in 25-pair bundles.

150-ohm STP

62.5/125-micron (or millionths of a meter [µm]) multimode optical fiber cable (where 62.5 refers to the core diameter and 125 refers to the cladding diameter), in groups of 6 to 12 fibers per sheath. Multimode cable sheaths are colored beige.

Single-mode optical fiber cable, in groups of 6 to 12 fibers per sheath. Single-mode cable sheaths are colored blue.

Horizontal Cabling

Four-pair 100-ohm UTP, Category 3, 4, or 5
(Category 5 recommended)

Two-pair 150-ohm STP

Two-fiber, 62.5/125-µm multimode optical fiber cable
