Lesson 4 - Popular OSs

   Introduction

In the last lesson, we discussed the main functions of an OS. In this lesson, we introduce the most common OSs used in LANs today. As we look at the features of each of these OSs, you will see that some support peer-to-peer networking, while others are full NOSs.

   Objectives

At the end of this lesson you will be able to:

1.	Name the two most popular NOSs
2.	Explain how an embedded OS is different from a typical computer OS
3.	Discuss some of the reasons why Linux is becoming a strong competitor to commercial OSs

Microsoft Windows is installed on most desktop computers; however, other OSs are also popular on network servers.
