National Electrical Code (NEC)
The NEC is a set of safety standards and rules for the design and installation of electrical circuits, including network and telephone cabling. The NEC is developed by a committee of ANSI, and has been adopted as law by many states and cities. Versions of the NEC are dated by year; each local area may require compliance with a different version of the NEC.
NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI)
NetBEUI is a Network and Transport Layer protocol designed to work within a single physical LAN. (It does not provide packet routing between networks.) NetBEUI is typically integrated with NetBIOS.
NetWare Core Protocol (NCP)
NCP is the proprietary protocol used by the NetWare OS to transmit information between clients and servers. NCP messages are transmitted by means of IPX, NetWare's Network Layer protocol.
Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)
NetBIOS is a software system originally developed by Sytek and IBM to allow a NOS to communicate with computer hardware. NetBIOS has been adopted by Microsoft Windows NT and Novell NetWare, and has become the de facto standard for application interface to all types of LANs. Thus, many LANs are described as "NetBIOS compatible."
Network File System (NFS)
NFS is a file management system commonly used in UNIX-based computer systems.
network interface card (NIC)
A NIC is a workstation or PC component (usually a hardware card) that allows the workstation or PC to communicate with a network. A NIC address is another term for hardware address or MAC address. A NIC address is a unique value built into a NIC.
Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP)
NNTP is a protocol used to post and retrieve USENET news group messages.
