Why do the animated Shockwave Flash figures show up as blank space in the middle of a page?

Product: Flash
Platform: Win
Versions: all
ID: 12644

If your computer has a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 or Diamond Stealth 3000 video card and your monitor is set to 16-bit color depth, you may have trouble seeing Flash movies (they simply do not appear, leaving an empty space where they should be.) Currently the only solution to this problem is to set the color depth of your monitor either higher (to 24- or 32-bit color) or lower (8-bit color.) Once the changes are made, Flash movies should once again show up.

How do I change my color depth?

Why do I see a broken icon when navigating to a Shockwave Flash site even if I have installed Shockwave?

SHOCKWAVE problems with Netscape Navigator:

Windows:

  1. While in Netscape Navigator 3.0, select About Plug-Ins from either the Help menu (Windows) or Apple menu (Macintosh).

  2. In the list of installed Plug-Ins, scroll down and verify that Shockwave for Director is in the list.

  3. In the list of installed Plug-Ins, scroll down and verify that Shockwave Flash is in the list. Make sure that you have the right version of Shockwave installed for your computer (for example, a PowerPC version of Shockwave won't work on a 68K Macintosh, and a 32-bit version of Shockwave won't work on a Windows 3.1 computer).

Macintosh:

If you get Out of Memory Errors (error IDs 5 or -108) when Shockwave is loading, increase your browser's application memory by 1000K increments and relaunch the browser until the problem goes away.

SHOCKWAVE problems with Internet Explorer:

Windows:

Open the Options dialog box in the View menu. Select the Security tab and make sure that the Enable ActiveX controls and plug-ins option in the Active Content section is selected.

Macintosh:

Open the Options dialog box in the Edit menu. Select the Web Content tab and make sure that Load Plug-In Objects is selected.

Why can't I check the Enable Java box in Options / Network Preferences / Languages? It's grayed out. Why don't I see anything on Java-enabled pages where the Java applet is supposed to be?

Navigator 3.0x and earlier

Operating Systems: Windows 3.x and Windows 95 (only if running a 16-bit version of Netscape)

Java does not work in 16-bit versions of Netscape Navigator 3.0x and earlier, even with Win32s installed. The minimum requirement for a PC to use 32 bit Netscape would be Windows 95 with Microsoft Dial-Up Networking installed. Communicator 4.0 and up support Java on 16-bit systems. There are various animations floating around. Server push, JavaScript and animated GIF are all supported by 16 bit Netscape. Java is not.

Why do I get the error message "Could not load Java…" on my Mac?

"When I start up Netscape I get a message that says, 'Could not load Java... Java 30 File not installed correctly.' I have a document called Java 30 in the Java folder of Netscape (J folder in the Preferences). I have a feeling that I just need to put it where it belongs. Where should it be?"

Several different solutions have been mentioned by people who have had the problem, but the one that has worked most often is reinstalling another Navigator 3.0x. We suggest downloading and installing Netscape Communicator 4.0x.

The offender seems to be ObjectSupportLib 1.1.6 when it is installed by another application. Reinstalling or custom-installing Navigator 3.0x puts back the correct version. If your Netscape Preferences file is not in the same folder as Java folder, this message appears, too. This can happen when you have more than one Netscape Preferences files for multiple e-mail account or multiple users. In this case, you have to make a copy of Java folder and place it in the same folder as Netscape Preferences.

Why can't I get my plug-ins to work? Netscape tells me that no plug-ins are installed, but I know they're there.

Your plug-ins should be in the Plug-ins folder in the Netscape Navigator folder. The Netscape application should be in the same Navigator folder. The plug-ins folder and the application must be at the same level. In addition, the folder must be named Plug-ins so Navigator can find it. If you want to use a plug-in with multiple versions of Navigator, you have to put the plug-in or an alias of it in the plug-ins folder of the other versions.

Why do the first images always seem incomplete and blurry when playing a RealVideo clip?

When attempting to play a video clip using RealPlayer 4.0, the first images seem incomplete and blurry. Delete RealPlayer 4.0 and download and install the most current version.

Why does RealPlayer stop when I attempt to use the slider or nudge button features? (RealPlayer is embedded as a plug-in.)

This occurs when using RealPlayer 4.0 embedded as a plug-in. You should delete version 4.0 and download and install the most current version (at least RealPlayer 5.0).

Why are the Flash animations and gifs doing odd things when I refresh the computer?

The Riva 128 default Video Driver has problems displaying Flash files and gifs. It shows up little off-white greenish squares on changing areas of Flash animations and shows gifs in a odd way after you refresh the computer. This can be fixed by getting the latest video drivers for that video card.

Why does the audio add a strange reverb mode to voice-overs?

The default settings for the Sound Blaster AWE 64 sound card add a strange reverb mode to voice-overs. This can be fixed by going into the Advanced Controls in the Volume Control settings in the Windows 95 taskbar and clicking on the Advanced button. You should disable 3D enhanced sound or check the Wave Control Section box.

Why does my system crash after clicking on the Specify Transport button in RealPlayer's Preferences?

You should delete the current version and download and install the most current version (at least RealPlayer 5.0).
